Get Help - Not Just Advice

    For decades business owners have told me they have all the advice they can stand - but that getting someone to actually help them address the challenges they face is often very difficult.

    During over a quarter of a Century helping business owners, farmers, and ranchers identify challenges, consider alternatives, and create practical solutions for designing the future of their company - I saw that most of them routinely received the help they were looking for from other people like them.

    Consulting is based on the premise that people will change their behavior based on something an "expert" like me tells them to do. That's why so much time and money invested with outsiders is wasted.

    On the other hand most of us are able to find the actionable strategies we need to solve the challenges we face by consistently discussing them with other people like ourselves who had "been there done that" - most often folks we connect with at our trade association or professional society's meetings.

So, I began to work with small groups of business owners - peers - teaching them how continue these strategic conversations from one association meeting to another. I helped them create agendas, schedule the conference calls, and keep the conversations on track.

Here are three of the elements of my peer group process that make them uniquely beneficial to the business owners who are part of them.

  • The Strategic Conversations™ facilitated peer group process provides a framework for growth. We begin each group with the goal of it becoming a d-i-y strategic planning process ASAP. The more committed the members are, the sooner they are able to take over their group and manage it productively, without me.

  • Group membership - always a key component of a success peer group, is determined by you. I will help you select the right people, people you trust and respect, from your universe. This structure is critical for the group to evolve into an informal board of advocates and advisors for you (and everyone else in the group) that can last for decades. My job is to help you make the decisions and even contact them for you.
